Arsenal win FA Womens Super League
Congratulations to Arsenal ladies on retaining their FA Womens Super League title following victory over Doncaster Belles on Sunday. Arsenal were already assured of the title after closest rivals Birmingham failed to defeat Bristol Academy earlier in the day, but a goal from Kelly Smith and two own goals from the Belles ensured that Arsenal celebrated with a victory.
It has been a very competitve campaign, but Arsenal’s extra quality has brought them the title again with international stars such as Smith, Rachel Yankey and Faye White taking the Gunners unbeaten through the season so far, with 10 wins from 13 games bringing them the title with a game to spare.
It has been a big year for womens football in the UK, with the Super League coming to the end of its second successful season, and attendances increasing by approximately 10% following the huge coverage of Team GB ladies during the London 2012 Olympics. Arsenal have been dominant in the womens games for a few years now, but with big names like Everton, Chelsea and Liverpool all fielding teams in the Super League – the 2013 campaign is sure to be just as hard fought.
