Womens Olympic football tournament preview

Ladies Olympic football

After 7 years of eager anticipation and preparation, the London Olympics kick off next week and the action begins with Team GB women taking on New Zealand at the Millenium Staduium on Wednesday 25th July. It should be a fantastic tournament with some high quality action, as this is a fully affiliated FIFA event so every nation will be out to win.

Team GB are managed by Hope Powell and feature plenty of the England players, so they should progress from a group that also features Cameroon and Brazil, who also meet in Cardiff next week. USA are the defending champions and will be the favourites once again, with Abby Wambach one of the favourites to top the scoring charts. Wambach will have particular motivation after missing Beijing through injury and then playing in the losing USA team in the World Cup final last year. However, France are in the same group as the USA and should give the Americans a good game with their entertaining style of play.

Japan are the other team to watch over in Group F, and will be looking to build on their surprise World Cup win last year. Canada, Sweden and South Africa complete that part of the draw.

The tournament consists of three groups of four teams, with the best 8 sides going through to the quarter finals, so we might have to wait until the latter stages until the action really gets going. This means there should be very few upsets in the early rounds, so the strongest two teams should reach the final which is on Thursday 9th August at Wembley.
